Acton, California - Summer Mud Magic

Matt smears the mud on his body grinning ear to ear. As he bends over the huge metal bowl filled with gooey brown mud he grabs the spoon to give it a stir. Just a few more swirls for the perfect consistency. There is an art to the perfect mud cake and he has it down. A commuter train rumbles in the distance blowing it's horn as it nears the RV park. Jonathan, Matt's older brother, looks on and wonders if the train is tooting its approval; probably not. Matt hears the train so often that he no longer responds. He is too engrossed in muddy endeavors to notice anyhow.

"Put it on your face! I dare you, Matt." Jonathan knows how to get his brother to do almost anything - especially for laugh.

Sinking his hands into the dark chocolate mud Matt flashes a mischevious grin. Mom is going to be pissed, the anticipation he feels is electric. He pulls up a handful of mud the size of a horse turd and starts to dab his cheeks.

"Oh man! You did it! I can't believe you did it!" Jonathan is beside himself with excitement. It's not clear if Jon likes his brother's gooey courage or the coming promise of his mother's comedic reaction.

Jonathan asks to help Matthew apply more mud on the hard-to-reach places. Matt only thinks for a second before telling his brother to start on his backside. Both brothers laugh when a huge handful of mud slurps its way down Matt's back and into his shorts. The mud dries in the warm California sun and the boys fight to reapply fresh coatings. With mud covering every square inch of Matt the brothers look at each other wondering what to do next. An idea drifts over Matthew's eyes like a summer cloud.

"Arrrrhhhhhhgggg!" Matt's guttural yell and raised arms summons the mud monster from within. Matt's sisters and brother look at each other in fear. The chase is on! All three of his siblings dart in different directions. Matt's oldest sister makes it safely into the RV and his brother defends himself with a water hose in hand. But his sister, Ella, finds no quarter. Running, screaming and laughing until they collapse without breath.

When the excitement dies down and Matt submits to a hose bath they just relax and chuckle together under a shade-tree. Everyone sits back basking in the moments that make summer magical.
